School parents create a website to counteract bad information
By Alliosn Rost
It's time to fight back.

A new website, published by parents at Stevens Creek Elementary School, aims to counteract the firestorm of controversy that has overtaken the school. In the wake of the lawsuit filed by Stevens Creek fifth-grade teacher Stephen Williams, the school has been wrongfully identified as banning the Declaration of Independence in media outlets across the country.

Because representatives of the Cupertino Union School District are choosing not to comment on the impending legal actions, a group of approximately 100 Stevens Creek parents are contributing to "We the Parents," located at www.stevenscreekparents.org. The site includes photos of the fifth grade's annual Revolutionary War re-enactments and lessons on the Christmas story in kindergarten classes.

Parent John Bartas registered the web address several days before the parent group formally got together. Website content is written mostly by parents and chosen by two active mailing lists. "It sounds chaotic, but we're very united in a common purpose, so it works," Bartas said in an e-mail. "I've actually never seen such a variety of people put aside their differences and work so well together."

Bartas has submitted the link to search engines such as Yahoo! and Google, with hopes that those searching for information on the lawsuit will find the site on their first page of results.

At recent meetings, Stevens Creek parents had expressed their dismay that their school had received irate emails and unfavorable coverage in certain media outlets based on an inaccuracy. The front page of the site shows photos of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution hanging in the school's Guided Learning Center.
