Vikes top Mustangs in consolation final
By Bob Scudder
It was an old fashioned barn-burner when Westmont and Santa Clara tipped off in the championship game of the 11th annual Don's Club Holiday Classic girls basketball tournament at Del Mar last Thursday night.

The Warriors and Bruins fought their way to the final buzzer in a tightly contested game when Santa Clara's last-second shot was off the mark and the Warriors danced off the court with a 39-38 victory to grab the championship.

Rachel Gellman led the Warriors, tossing in 15 on the night. Gellman was rewarded for her exceptional play by being selected as the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Stacey Stenzel was also an all-tournament selection for Westmont and Jacqui Fountain and Oanh Phan were named to the all-tournament team for the Bruins.

Westmont opened the tourney with another hard fought victory, finally prevailing 44-33 over Lynbrook.

Lynbrook picked up a strong performance from Tiffany Pan, who led the Vikings with a sizzling attack from beyond the arc, popping in 14 points—including four three balls. Support came from Emily Shen and Vickie Chen with six each. Katie Yamauchi dumped in five. Pan went on to win a place on the all-tournament team.

The host Dons were hoping to make it to the championship game but ran into Santa Clara in the semifinals and lost 41-34. The Dons defeated Independence and they came ready to play. The Dons won 61-53.

The consolation championship was another nail-biter with Lynbrook grabbing a 48-44 overtime victory over Homestead. The first half was a nip and tuck defensive affair with the Vikings squeezing out a slim 14-13 advantage at the break.

Both teams broke out the offensive guns in the third quarter with Lynbrook extending its lead to 33-26 by the time the quarter had expired. But the Mustangs came storming back with another solid offensive quarter and limited the Vikings output with intense defense which allowed them to eliminate the deficit and send the game into overtime tied at 41-41. But Lynbrook rallied to outscore the Mustangs 7-4 in overtime and claim the consolation championship.

The Vikings had the long-range attack working again, finding the mark on nine three-pointers. Pan led the barrage from behind the arc with four three balls and a total of 14 points. Gloria Sue was right behind, firing in 11 points, including a three-pointer. Shen and Chen tossed in seven points each with two and one respectively from three-point land. Laura Crisler added six points and Yamauchi rounded out the scoring with a three-ball.

Cheryl Ichikawa had the hot hand for the Mustangs, dropping in 14 points, and Shelly Baxter had the range as well, pouring in 13 points. Ichikawa played consistently well throughout the tourney and was an all-tournament selection. Kate Mower racked up seven points and Melissa Manuel added six. Elan Kim had four to round out the Homestead effort.

Homestead was in the consolation bracket as the result of getting edged 44-43 by Santa Clara in the opening round of play. The Mustangs got a slow start, unable to find the bucket in the first quarter, and were outscored 15-3. However, they fought back and were down only 24-20 at the half. Homestead continued to eat away at the lead and actually outscored Santa Clara in both of the final two quarters but came up just a little short in the end.

Ichikawa led the charge, firing in 11 points. Both Kim and Manuel tossed in eight while Baxter and Mower added six each. Claudia Lee rounded it out with four.

Homestead went on to knock off Mt. Pleasant in the consolation semifinals with a solid 35-29 win. The Mustangs jumped out to a 15-7 first quarter bulge and continued to hold off the Cardinals the rest of the way for the win. The balanced attack of Homestead had Mower at the top of the board with 11 points and Ichikawa coming in a close second with 10.

Lynbrook advanced to the consolation finals by virtue of a convincing 35-20 victory over Saratoga. Crisler netted 10 points and was the leader for Lynbrook. Yamauchi swished in nine, including a couple of threes, and Chen popped eight. Shen added five and Sue picked up three.
