Police arrest the 'Subway Bandit' suspect
By Hugh Biggar
San Jose police arrested Zachariah Ciprian Feb. 27 on charges of armed robbery. Ciprian is suspected of being the so-called "Subway Bandit," the robber of several local sandwich shops, including the Quizno's in Cupertino on Homestead Road.

Police suspect Ciprian, 27, may have been involved in at least 15 armed robberies. Police say he may be responsible for twice that number since mid-January in several Santa Clara County communities.

The robber used a handgun to rob the sandwich shops, typically between 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.

Police first spotted Ciprian at a gas station in San Jose Feb. 26, shortly after the robbery of a nearby sandwich shop. After being spotted, Ciprian fled on foot, leaving behind a 16-year-old female passenger in an SUV. Police apprehended him the next day in east San Jose. They also are investigating Ciprian's possible involvement in a carjacking the evening of Feb. 26.

Police suspect the 16-year old passenger acted as a getaway driver in some of the robberies. She was charged as a juvenile.
