Most contestants simply say goodbye after they receive their awards, but many of those who placed in the top five of the National PTA Reflections program will get to show their stuff one more time.
On March 23, Quinlan Community Center will host young musicians, artists and poets who entered the contest from the Cupertino-Fremont Council Parent-Teacher Association and other local PTAs. The youngsters created their works for the national program, which encourages creative exploration on a specific theme each year. This year, the theme was "A Different Kind of Hero."
All first-place entries in the council recently went to the state PTA for judging. The areas included are literature, musical composition, photography and the visual arts. Grade levels include primary, which is preschool through second grade; intermediate, which is grades three through five; middle/junior, grades six through eight and senior, which is ninth through 12th grade.
And the winners are:
Lincoln Elementary School—Achal Srinivasan placed first and Shivani Mouleeswaran placed fourth in primary music composition, Neel Mouleeswaran placed first in intermediate music composition and Frank Lee placed second in intermediate visual arts.
Stocklmeir Elementary—Nicholas Berger Davis placed third in primary music composition, Yossi Hertzberg placed fifth in primary photography, and Leslie Tsai placed second and Anand Purohit placed fifth in intermediate photography.
Garden Gate Elementary—Jason Chu placed second in primary visual arts and Harsha Bapat placed second in primary literature.
Blue Hills Elementary—Paige Janac placed fourth in intermediate visual arts.
Kennedy Middle School—Nikil Srinivasan placed second in junior music competition and third and fourth in junior photography.
Hyde Middle School—Melissa Kim placed second in junior visual arts.
Miller Middle School—Sharon Li placed first in junior visual arts, Avon Kuo placed third in the same category and Jay Goldberg placed fifth in junior photography.
Monta Vista High School—Christopher Lin placed second in senior music composition, Tiffany Jon placed first and Michael Ahu placed fourth in senior visual arts, Brittany Toda placed third and Austin Cheng placed fifth in senior photography, and Swati Patki placed fourth in senior literature.
Lynbrook High—Jereen Kwong placed first in senior music composition and Marcel Stieber placed fourth in senior photography.
Homestead High—Tiffany Liu placed third in senior visual arts.
Cupertino High—Jasmine Lai placed fifth in senior visual arts.
Students will perform and exhibit their work on March 23 at 7 p.m. at the Quinlan center, which is located at 10185 N. Stelling Road.
