Fireworks will light up city's night skies
By Lee Gordon
The streets should be dark and the sky bright in Cupertino on the evening of Independence Day.

This Fourth of July, rockets' red glare will launch from Cupertino High School, the site of city's pyrotechnics show for the second consecutive summer. The popular event, which draws crowds from throughout the Santa Clara Valley, moved from De Anza College last summer because of construction projects there. Due to safety considerations, Cupertino High School on Finch Avenue will be off limits to spectators.

People will have a blast elsewhere, though, watching the city's fireworks from nearby parks and schools, including Creekside Park, Hyde Middle School and Sedgwick Elementary School. Earlier there will be musical entertainment, face painting and games for youngsters at Creekside Park.

Activities are scheduled to begin at 6:45 p.m., with the fireworks show beginning at 9:30 p.m.

The following streets will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians from 6 to 11 p.m. in order to provide clear access for emergency vehicles stationed at Cupertino High: All of Finch Avenue; Calle de Barcelona between Miller and Finch avenues; Tilson Avenue between Finch and Tantau avenues; Phil Lane between Miller and Finch avenues and Stendahl Lane between Shadygrove Drive and Phil Lane. Any vehicles parked on closed streets will be towed.

After 6 p.m., vehicles will be diverted to parking lots at Vallco Fashion Park, which is close to the viewing sites. Residents with handicap placards will be able to park at Creekside Park.

The city encourages neighbors to turn off their porch lights and also warns that fireworks can set off car alarms. With a large crowd expected, residents should keep their pets at home. After the event, 25 deputies from the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department will be managing traffic flow.
