Mats bring home helmet in clash with Cupertino
By Mike Barnhart
Cupertino's football team came oh, so close to regaining the helmet from Monta Vista in the traditional "Helmet Game." Matadors Marcus Woo and Derek Ley had other plans, though.

Woo, filling in at quarterback for Alex Atkins, turned three option keepers into long touchdown runs, and Ley kicked three conversions and a decisive field goal, leading Monta Vista to a 24-21 Santa Clara Valley Athletic League El Camino Division triumph over the host Pioneers on Nov. 10.

With the victory, the Matadors improved to 5-5 overall and they finished the El Camino season in fourth place with a 3-3 record, one game behind third-place Fremont (4-2). Cupertino, which lost three division games by five points or less, ended 1-5 and 2-8 overall.

Woo, who had a trio of first-half touchdowns the previous week at Gunn, repeated the feat at Cupertino. He broke off a 90-yarder in the first quarter, then got loose in the second quarter for touchdown runs of 64 and 68 yards.

"He scored in typical Houdini fashion," chuckled Monta Vista coach Jeff Mueller about the talented Woo, who was shifted from wide receiver to quarterback prior to the Gunn game. "He fakes the ball into the line and then gets around the end before the defense realizes what hit them."

Atkins, who did not play against Gunn because of a concussion suffered against Santa Clara on Oct. 29, played a few series at Cupertino, but Woo started and gave Cupertino fits.

While Woo was totaling 225 rushing yards outside the ends, senior running back Roger Kapul pounded the ball between the tackles for 167 yards. Opening the holes up front were guards Salmen Ahmed and Hoo Hong, tackles Tony McKee and Chris Kong and center Brian Frediani.

Monta Vista needed every one of Ley's PAT's as well as his 25-yard field goal in the third quarter. That's because Cupertino's offense was clicking too.

Quarterback Yuekai Yu completed 14 passes for 166 yards for the Pioneers, including a touchdown pass to David Warren. Jimmy Trask, the Pioneers' top ground gainer with 65 yards and one touchdown on 11 carries, also threw for a touchdown. He connected with Travis Scibetta on a halfback option pass that covered 65 yards.

Cupertino, which trailed 7-6 at the end of the first quarter and 21-13 at halftime, also picked up points on Max Ingraham's PAT kick in the second quarter and a two-point conversion pass from Yu to Warren in the third period.

The two-pointer brought the Pioneers to within 24-21, but neither team scored in the fourth quarter. Woo and teammate Kota Kojima made interceptions that "helped seal the win," Mueller said.

Top defenders for Monta Vista were seniors Ben Rutter, Nick Burrow, Cody Chamberlain, Justin Turner, Rajn Nanavati, Hong and Brian Park, junior Mike Moustakas and sophomore Peter Kosulin.

"It was a tough, tough game--an emotional game," Mueller said. "Hats off to Cupertino and coach Al Diaz. They had us scouted well and caused us some problems with their defensive fronts."

Mikey Bednar was Cupertino's top tackler with 10. Kash Erfanian made eight tackles, Trask and Justin Barnett had six stops apiece, and John Correra, Gonzalo Garcia, Jeff Nguyen and Stephen Gu added five each. Winston Ventura and Brian Lee both chipped in with four tackles.

Scibetta (140 yards), Warren (43) and Reneto Sanchez (39) all had four catches for the Pioneers. Chase Hill had two grabs for 31 yards, and Trask gained 13 yards on two receptions.
