Percussionist Tzong-Ching Ju not only marches to the beat of a different drummer, but he is the different drummer leading the innovative Ju Percussion Group.
South Bay audiences will get to hear the group in action in its program "Percussions Nouvelles: When East Meets West" on March 17 at 8 p.m. at the Flint Center, 21250 Stevens Creek Blvd., Cupertino.
Dimension Performing Arts, a San Jose-based arts organization that specializes in presenting Asian performing arts groups, is bringing the Ju Percussion Group to the United States from Taiwan. DPA sponsors annual presentations featuring artists who are visiting from Asia in shows for the community, as well as performances and special workshops for local schools.
Founded in 1986, the Ju Percussion Group is known for its creative fusion of Eastern and Western sounds, and a dynamic, high-energy performance style. The 11-member company performs on traditional Chinese and Western percussion instruments, but also "plays" everyday objects, such as kitchen utensils. In a piece called "Dancing Rhythms," the human body is the only instrument, with clapping, stamping and other movement making all the music.
The Ju Percussion Group has performed internationally, with appearances in Asia, Europe, Australia and North America. The group has recorded 15 albums.
Tickets are $22-$48 ($100 VIP). For more information, call 408.568.5861, 408.864.8816 or visit www.dimensionarts.org.
