Wilson tosses National to junior win

By MIKE BARNHART

Pitcher Kevin Wilson settled down after a jittery first inning and carried his Cupertino National Little League team to a 5-1 victory over Moreland in the opening game of the District 44 Junior all-star tournament June 29 at Miller Middle School.

Wilson got off to a shaky start, allowing two walks and a hit--but no runs--in the first inning, but he no-hit Moreland over the next five innings and took a shutout into the seventh. The CN right hander's complete game 3-hitter was just the first of more than 100 games that will be played in District 44's five double-elimination all-star tournaments, during a three-week span.

District 44, which consists of 14 local leagues in Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Los Altos, Mountain View, Santa Clara, Campbell and west San Jose, services more than 6,000 boys and girls each spring. District winners move on to Section 5 events.

While the rest of the district tourneys begin this week, the nine junior (ages 13 and 14) squads got started prior to the Fourth of July holiday. First-round results included: Los Altos over Cupertino American 13-3; Sunnyvale Southern an 11-1 winner over Tri-Cities; and Mountain View a 7-0 victor over Sunnyvale National.

A day after Wilson's gem against Moreland, Cupertino National received a strong mound effort from Tyler Young. But, despite allowing just four hits and two runs in six innings, Young and CN suffered a 2-1 setback to Serra. Mikey Huaun's RBI single chased home Paul Kamradt with the decisive run in the last of the sixth. Earlier, in the fourth, Kamradt had tripled and scored the game's first run on a sacrifice fly by Huaun.

Winning pitcher Devan Ramsour, who benefited from two double-plays, scattered six hits over seven innings, including two by CN shortstop Jay Voigt. Jason Kearns, who like Wilson banged out a pair of singles against Moreland, drove in Voigt for CN's lone run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.

Both teams resume play on July 6, CN tangling with Sunnyvale National in an elimination game at Farrell Field and Serra clashing with Mountain View in a winners' bracket tilt at Blackford Field in San Jose. The junior championship game is set for July 11 at Farrell Field.

Joining Wilson, Young, Kearns and Voigt on Cupertino National's squad are Zachary Carlsen, Zachary Fondario, Christian Fatoohi, Chase Hayhurst, Aaron Mack, Anthony Maldonado, Vincent Menon, Hikaru Matarai, Kranti Peddada and Kalon Zandbergs.

In addition to Kamradt, Huaun and Ramsour, Serra's roster includes Alex Chapman, Eric Chapman, Patrick Crowley, Sean Lawson, Justin Matsuura, James Osorio, Craig Taubman, Luke Twomey, Nick Utley and Joey Whitworth.

After losing its opener, Cupertino American hoped to bounce back at Moreland on July 5 at Blackford. CA team members include Tyler Anthony, Kyle Brown, Derek DeFranl, Kyle Dziuba, Mark Fratus, Ben Meunier, Ryan Patton, Robert Prada, Eric Queen, Nathaniel Recine, Corey Snodgrass, Yoshi Takahashi and Billy Zamagni.

A win over Moreland would put Cupertino American into a July 6 elimination contest with Tri-Cities at Hyde Middle School. Tri-Cities team members are Derek Zhou, Matthew Wright, Jonathan Cousins, Adrian Perez, Grant Robinson, Spencer Franks, Sachin Radhakrishnan, Joshua Chen, Steven Grenier, Jorrit van den Elshout, Brandon Mardesich, Ryan Carson and Tyler Melen.
