Woo scores three touchdowns to lead Monta Vista to victory
By MIKE BARNHART
Marcus Woo, who scored 17 touchdowns for Monta Vista as a junior, started his senior season with a bang, pacing the Matadors to a 35-13 win over Yerba Buena on Sept. 8 at Cupertino High.
The fleet-footed 5-foot-8 slotback had three touchdowns, scoring on runs of 26 and 12 yards and on a 25-yard pass from senior quarterback Alex Atkins.
Monta Vista never trailed in the game. The Matadors built a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a one-yard run by Atkins, a 17-yard romp by senior Kota Kojima and the first two of senior Derek Ley's five PAT kicks. Woo's first score came in the second quarter, giving the Matadors a 21-6 lead at halftime.
The victory sets up a match-up of explosive offenses against Willow Glen. The Rams, 40-0 winners over Fremont in their first game, will host Monta Vista, Sept. 15, at 7:30 p.m.
Cupertino opens with win, tie
An early unbeaten streak--albeit a small one--will be on the line when Cupertino hosts Wilson Prep of Oakland, Sept. 16, at 7:30 p.m.
After dumping Yerba Buena, 26-6, in their home opener, the Pioneers hung on for a 7-7 tie in a defensive struggle against Sobrato of Morgan Hill last Friday at Live Oak.
Cupertino led 7-0 at halftime, but Sobrato tied the game in the fourth quarter. It was the second straight week that the Pioneers held their opponent scoreless for three quarters.
Senior Jimmy Trask scored a pair of touchdowns against the Warriors, a one-yard run and a 92-yard kick-off return. The Pioneers' other touchdowns came on an 18-yard pass from senior quarterback Yuekai Yu to junior Nate Smith and a five-yard interception return by senior Scott Savory. Max Ingraham added two PAT kicks.
Homestead falls to 0-2 with loss
For the second week in a row, Homestead scored 21 points. But for the second straight week, the Mustangs came up a bit short. Branham dumped Homestead 37-21 on Friday night at Diesner Field.
Homestead will be looking for its first win of the season when the Mustangs visit Leland on Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
