Feeling of 'deja Woo' for Mats
By MIKE BARNHART
There must have been a feeling of "deja Woo" on the Cupertino High School football field Oct. 6, as Monta Vista's stellar, senior speedster, Marcus Woo was a scoring machine against Gunn for the second year in a row.
Woo, whose three touchdowns keyed a 30-18 triumph over Gunn in 2005, reached the end zone four times last Friday night. The result was a 30-0 victory, running the Matadors' perfect record to 5-0 and maintaining their perch atop the standings in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
Monta Vista takes a 2-0 mark into its next division game, Oct. 13 at Saratoga. The Falcons (4-1, 1-1) had racked up four straight wins prior to last week's 31-21 loss to Los Altos (4-1, 1-0).
Woo, in his third season racking up points for Monta Vista's varsity, caught a pair of touchdown passes from senior quarterback Alex Atkins and returned the second half kick-off and a fumble for two other scores. The 5-foot-8, 165-pounder now has 11 touchdowns.
Atkins, whose longest completion coming into the game was 22 yards, now has six touchdown passes, five to Woo. The duo hooked up on a 53-yard scoring strike in the second quarter and a 35-yarder in the fourth period. Woo opened the third period by racing the length of the field for a touchdown. Later, he collected a Gunn fumble and rambled 35 yards for another score.
Junior kicker Derrick Ley put the Matadors ahead with a 34-yard field goal in the first quarter, and he later added conversion kicks to three of Woo's TDs.
