William & Margery Newman
William "Bill'' Newman and his wife, Margery "Marge'' Newman --50-year residents of Cupertino--have both died.
Bill Newman, a 20-year employee of the Cupertino Post Office, died last November. Marge Newman followed almost a month later, after a lengthy illness. Both were 83.
Bill Newman, who was born in Colorado and raised in Texas, served as a B-29 radar operator during World War II. He completed 21 missions for the U.S. Air Force, flying over "The Hump" from India to China. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross , the Air Medal, two Oak Leaf Clusters and a Purple Heart.
Following the war, he moved to Cupertino where he met and married Marge Roach. The couple then moved to Amarillo, Texas, and had three children, Janet, Kenneth and Katherine. In 1957, the Newman family moved back to Cupertino.
While Bill Newman worked for the Cupertino Post Office, Marge Newman managed a medical office. The couple was also active in their children's schools, scout groups, churches and the American Legion Los Altos Post No. 558 and its Honor Society (40&8) Voiture 365 Santa Clara.
Bill Newman held positions in the Legion and Honor Society as post commander, District 13 adjutant, chef de gare and correspondent. He was one of the members who converted a small school bus into a locomotive, featured in various parades in Los Altos, Mountain View and San Jose.
In tribute to Bill Newman's military services and contributions to his community, Los Altos Mayor Ronald D. Packard recently issued a proclamation declaring Nov. 24, 2006, as William J. Newman Day.
Marge Newman also received numerous awards for her leadership and extensive volunteer hours with the American Legion.
Following the death of their oldest daughter, Janet, from multiple sclerosis, Marge turned grief into service by learning how to transcribe books into Braille for blind and sight-impaired individuals. She was certified by the Library of Congress as a Braille transcriber in 1980 and was a volunteer for the Santa Clara Center for the Blind Braille Transcription Project.
The Newmans are survived by their son, Kenneth Newman, and his wife, Cynthia; and daughter, Katherine Kinnamon, and her husand Michael and their daughters, Anna and Leah.
