Camerata California to play at St. Luke's for evensong
St. Luke's Episcopal Church, at 20 University Ave., has planned its first evensong service and concert of 2002 for Jan. 6 at 4 p.m. The afternoon begins with the church's traditional evening prayer service set to music; it includes canticles, psalms and prayers.
Afterward will be a 30-minute candlelight performance by Camerata California, a South Bay-based ensemble that sings and plays festive 16th century vocal and instrumental music. The group was invited back to St. Luke's in response to popular request following its prior performances at the church.
The concert includes Renaissance Carnival song and dance music, whose themes relate to Twelfth Night (Epiphany) and New Year's Eve. The musicians play period instruments such as recorders, krummhorns, shawms and ranketts, along with guitars and percussion.
Camerata California formed four years ago with the goal of exploring, rehearsing and performing music from the 14th through 17th centuries--from Medieval to Baroque. The ensemble is self-directed, with guidance from its artistic director, Dr. Vernon Read.
Everyone is welcome to attend. There is no charge for the concerts, but a freewill offering will be accepted. The 2000-2001 Evensong series runs the first Sunday of the month through May. For more information, call 408.354.2195.
