One more suspect arrested as part of LGHS operation

    By Gloria I. Wang

Police recently made their 19th drug-related arrest stemming from a three-month undercover operation at Los Gatos High School that led to warrants for the arrest of 22 juveniles and adults. The remaining three suspects, all students, are expected to be arrested after Jan. 1, when they return to Los Gatos from being on vacation.

David Potts, 18, turned himself into the Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police Department Dec. 21, a day after police officers had removed a dozen students from class at the beginning of third period and arrested them for a variety drug charges. Six others, some juveniles and others not, were arrested that same day. Potts was wanted on one charge of possession for sale of marijuana. According to Police Captain Alana Forrest, Potts had been out of town the day of the multiple arrests, and is not a Los Gatos High School student.

Eight of the juveniles were cited and released to their parents on Dec. 21. The rest were detained at juvenile hall until a Dec. 26 court date, at which one boy was released into the custody of his mother, another youth was sentenced to a 30-day program and the remaining four suspects will be kept at juvenile hall. Those offenders are scheduled for a second court date in mid-January.

The arrests came as a result of an operation in which a police officer posed as a high school junior and became involved in drug activity at the school. Although LGHS administrators did not know the identity of the police officer, Principal Trudy McCulloch had agreed to the operation in September.

The adult suspects are expected to be arraigned on court dates between Jan. 3 and Jan. 14. At the arraignment, the suspects will be formally charged with crimes, each with at least one count of sales and/or possession of marijuana, ecstasy, cocaine or methamphetamine.
