New In Town

DoorDrop brings it home

David and Kerri Jaye think they're on to something big. Their new business, DoorDrop Shopping Delivered, ships more than 1,000 household items, such as soap, diapers, cleaning supplies, nonperishable food and apple-scented trash bags, straight from the supplier's warehouse to the consumer. It's called drop-shipping, and it's a sizeable trend across the country, for both multinational corporations and cottage industries.

"It's a service we wanted to provide people, especially because everyone is so busy. They seem to have less and less time to do the things they enjoy," Kerri Jaye says. DoorDrop, however, also supplies those who can't get out to do their own shopping, and institutions such as hospitals and convalescent homes.

After beginning research on their business plan two years ago, the Jayes started DoorDrop this summer. Since then, they say, things have been taking off, and with even better expectations for next year, expansion is on the horizon.

Kerri Jaye designed the company's Web page. It offers a secure link for transactions on the Internet, which lets David and Kerri Jaye do business all over the country from their home in Los Gatos.

"It gives you 24/7 access that keeps up with the pace of the valley's movement," David Jaye says. "We think it will turn into a big industry, especially with the Internet."

While they're trying to build up a customer base across the country, the Jayes are also concentrating on local development.,

"It's easy because of where we are, and people are always so busy here," Kerri Jaye explains.

They don't, however, see their business as something totally new-wave, but rather as an extension of the bygone days when the neighborhood grocery store also made deliveries.

DoorDrop can be found on the Internet, or by phone at 648-3604.
