Air quality district plans 'Spare the Air' The Bay Area Air Quality Management District will begin issuing advisories via radio and television on heavy pollution days asking residents to help cut down pollution from fires and cars. Smoke from wood-burning tends to accumulate when cold air is trapped near the ground by a layer of warm air above it, which acts to keep pollution near the surface. For a free handbook on wood-burning, please call the BAAQMD at 1-800-HELP AIR or log on to www.sparetheair.org.
