ObituariesRichard Rhodes Former Los Gatos resident Dr. Richard C. Rhodes died Nov. 12 at the age of 70 in Sun City West, Ariz. Born July 5, 1927, in Kansas City, Mo., Rhodes served as president of the Peninsula Occupational Medical Society from 1972 to 1974 and as president of the American Lung Association of Santa Clara County from 1973 to 1974. He was also a member of the American Medical Association, the American Society of Internal Medicine and the American College of Preventive Medicine. Locally, he worked on staff at Good Samaritan Hospital, O'Connor Hospital and the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. He also ran a private practice in internal medicine from 1957 through 1984. Survivors include wife Betsy Nevins Rhodes of Arizona; daughter Carla Ingram of San Jose; sons Richard Jr. and Gordon, both of San Jose; and sister Hulda Kitchen of El Paso, Texas. Memorial services have been held. Donations may be made to a favorite charity. Samuel Gruver Samuel Gruver of Los Gatos died Nov. 15 of cancer at the age of 77. Born June 22, 1920, in Hot Springs, S.D., Gruver worked as chief salary administrator at Lockheed for more than 40 years. After retirement, he served on the board of directors for Tracy Federal Bank. He was an avid tennis player and also loved traveling, both in the United States and through Europe. His last trip was to the U.S. Open Tennis Championship in New York. Survivors include wife Renee Gruver of Fremont; daughter and son-in-law Lynne and Stuart Rovin of Los Gatos; and grandchildren Daniel and Sarah of Los Gatos. Memorial services have been held, with interment at Los Gatos Memorial Park. Richardson died of multiple myeloma on Nov. 16. He was 68. Richardson worked for General Electric's nuclear services for 36 years, over which time he was credited with 14 patents in non-destruction testing. Survivors include wife Cyra of Los Gatos; children David, Scott and Danielle Richardson; stepdaughters Theresa Collier-Young and Ronda Collier; and four grandchildren. A private celebration of his life has been held. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Red Cross. Darrell Graves Darrell E. Graves of Los Gatos died of a stroke Nov. 21 at the age of 83. Born Aug. 5, 1914, in Portland, Ore., Graves lived in Los Gatos for more than 50 years. During the 1940s and early '50s, he owned and operated City Hall Market in town. He also worked for Westinghouse Electric Corp. in Sunnyvale for 25 years as a senior buyer in the marine division. During World War II, Graves served as an aviator and flight instructor with the U.S. Air Force and became a member of the Order of the Quiet Birdmen. He also belonged to the First United Methodist Church of Los Gatos. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Darrell E. and Patricia M. Graves of Kauai, Hawaii; grandchildren Kirsten Salmon of Alamo, Calif., and Derek Graves of Kauai; great-grandchildren Casey, Jacob, Olivia and Hanah Salmon, all of Alamo; sister Nelda Graves Emery of San Jose and brother Robert N. Graves of Portland, Ore. Memorial services have been held. Donations may be made to a favorite charity. Kenneth Cushman Former Los Gatan Kenneth F. Cushman died Dec. 1 in a convalescent hospital in Wallace, Calif., where he had been residing. He was 85. Cushman was born in Los Gatos on Oct. 30, 1912. A football player at Los Gatos High School, he was nicknamed "Dynamite Cushman." After graduating, he worked in the logging and sawmill business until he started his own enterprise, Cushman Construction Co., which was based in Los Gatos. In 1969, Cushman's son, Kenneth Jr., took over the business. Cushman moved to Locke-ford, where he went into ranching and raised quarter horses and cattle. In 1987, he sold the ranch, retired and moved to Wallace. He is survived by wife Doris Gingles Cushman of Wallace; daughter Linda P. Cushman of Covelo, Calif.; son Kenneth F. Cushman of San Jose; stepchildren Bill Bishop, Bryon Bishop, Judith Kaough and Wayne Gingles; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Memorial services have been held. Mary Correa Longtime Los Gatos resident Mary E. Correa died Dec. 2 in Santa Cruz following a lengthy illness. She was 85. Correa was a native of the Azores Islands. She enjoyed handicrafts and was particularly talented at crocheting afghans, which she donated to Catholic Sisters Boutique shops. In her most prolific crocheting year, she made 20 afghans. She was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church in Aptos as well as the Cabrillo Club. Correa was preceded in death by husband Manuel. Survivors include daughter Hilda Casey of Oceanside; one grandson and two granddaughters. Memorial services have been held, with interment at Holy Cross Mausoleum/ Cemetery.
