Los Gatos Weekly-TimesOfficial sticks Los Gatos with a forfeit in tourney title gameA misunderstanding ended up costing the Los Gatos girls' soccer team the team championship at the Royal Tournament in Simi Valley over winter break. The Wildcats defeated Highland 4-1, Santa Rosa 1-0 and Alemany 1-0, and they were leading LaReina 3-0 in the final game when the opponents protested the participation of a Gatos player who had received two yellow cards the previous game. Los Gatos believed that the player had been cleared to play in the final game, but tournament officials upheld the protest and forfeited the game to LaReina. Los Gatos had earned its place in the title game with back-to-back 1-0 wins over Santa Rosa and Alemany. Stacey Caro scored on a penalty kick in the win over Santa Rosa, and Amie Salfen scored with two minutes left to play in the game in the win over Alemany. Marcia Wallis had a goal and two assists, and Salfen and Caro each had a goal and an assist in the win over Highland. The Cats are now 5-1 for the year and will open play in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League on Jan. 7 at home against Mountain View.
