Cherished ornaments donated by mistake
By Mary Ann Cook
LOST CHRISTMAS DECOR: Carmela and Paul Meredith were doing some major cleaning recently and decided some boxes were destined for the Happy Dragon resale shop. Paul took such a box dutifully down to the shop early last month. But the box he took turned out to be the wrong one.
It was full of Christmas decorations--50 years worth to be exact. The fact that it was the wrong box wasn't discovered until just before Christmas. Mrs. M. was set to decorate and couldn't find the decorations. She was bereft. That box was chock full of memories, as well as decorations.
The Happy Dragon staff doesn't offer much hope for the ornaments' return. Christmas decorations go fast, because there really isn't room in the shop for them, and this box was dropped off in early December.
However, do call the Dragon if you think you may have the box or any part of the Meredith memories. Some ornaments had their name on them, Carmela reports. Any return would be appreciated. Paul Meredith was an English teacher at Los Gatos High School for many years--now retired.
Though the Meredith memorabilia may be long gone, some things do show up at the Dragon inadvertently. One time a few years back, an upper plate was found in a suitcase. Chew on that oddity.
WANDERLUST LAUREATE: Pico Iyer, termed the poet laureate of wanderlust, will speak at Montalvo on Jan. 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Carriage House Theatre. His subject is "The Global Soul: Looking for Home and Self in a World on the Move," exploring new definitions of self and community in a global society.
Iyer is best known for his travelogues, Video Night in Katmandu and Falling off the Map. Iyer's latest book is The Global Soul: Jet Lag, Shopping Malls, and the Search for Home, a collection of essays, both comic and serious, about living in a global society with dissolving borders.
Born in England of Indian parents, Iyer attended Eton and then Oxford, where he received a master's degree in English. He earned a second master's from Harvard and taught there for two years. Iyer lives in California and Japan and has been a regular contributor to Time magazine since 1982.
His work has appeared in publications from Harper's and National Geographic to Germany's Lettre International and the Kyoto University football magazine. Issues such as airports, and the need for silence and space will be explored from the perspective of a man whose life is travel.
Tickets are $25-$30. The box office is at 408.961.5858 or online at villamontalvo.org.
EBAY SALES ACTION: Friends of the Los Gatos Library have recently taken to selling better books donated to them through eBay. In one week the books Dale Hill had listed on eBay sold for $479. Though no interest had been shown earlier, the buyer waited until the last day to make a bid.
Another Friends' board member, Mike Reed, took digital photos of the oversized books and emailed them to her so they could be included with the description. The highest bid was for Cartography of the Northwest Coast of America, to 1800. "Now doesn't that sound like a page-turner?" asks Hill.
"It's rare, out of print, and sold for $222.39." Other eBay highlights for Hill recently were a leather-bound book of Frederick Remington paintings to a German buyer and People and Art in the Philippines to a party in Austria. Another eBay purchase, a book of New Yorker covers, made it--barely--in time for Christmas.
Friends will hold a bi-monthly book sale Jan. 19, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the library. Some outstanding donations have been coming in lately, including a first edition of Gone With the Wind, reports book sale guru Marge Rice. She's assisted by Joanne Crum, Lesley Dinette and Pamela Laurence.
