Los Gatos athletes have been inpressive on the field, on the trails, on the diamond and in the classroom in recent weeks. The accomplishments of some those local stars includes:

    Hygelund second

John Hygelund of Los Gatos rolled to a second-place finish last month at the Northern California-Nevada District Cyclo Cross championships held at Manzanita Park in Prunedale.

The solid finish at the district race came a week after Hygelund finished first at the Surf City Cyclo Cross race series.

The district event in Prunedale determined the top racers in the region, considered one of the best in the nation for cyclo cross riders.

Hygelund, a senior at Los Gatos High, had finished first last spring at the Northern California-Nevada Time Trial championships held in Sattley near Truckee.

    Rollin on 'star team

An all-star baseball team from Northern California won the championship in the 40-team Brea Holiday Classic Baseball Tournament in Southern California, and Los Gatos pitcher Alex Rollin was a member of the NorCal club.

Rollin, a sophomore at Gatos, helped the NorCal all-stars win five straight games. The club allowed just eight runs in the tournament and committed no errors. He was one of just three sophomores on the squad.

The tournament featured teams from all over the West Coast. The NorCal squad was made up mostly of players from the Bay Area, but also included players from Redding and Fresno, and also one from Arlington, Texas.

Derek Marquardt Derek Marquardt of Leigh has been selected as a scholar-athlete by the National Football Hall of Fame Foundation.

    Marquardt honored

Derek Marquardt of Los Gatos, a senior at Leigh, is one of three football players from the Santa Clara County who have been selected as scholar-athletes by the National Football Hall of Fame Foundation.

Marquardt will join Brian Edwards of Los Gatos and Troy Bienemann of St. Francis at a banquet to be held in their honor on Feb. 15 in San Francisco.

Marquardt, a 4.0 student throughout high school who currently holds a 4.4 GPA, was a three-year starter on the Leigh varsity football team. He played tight end and defensive end for the Longhorns and was also their punter and place-kicker. He was a team captain at Leigh this past season.

The senior will play his fourth season of varsity volleyball this spring and is currently in his second second on the varsity basketball team at Leigh. He is a member of the Key Club, Link Crew and CSF Honor Society, and is also a peer tutor.

    Anderson a starter

Elliot Anderson of Los Gatos was the starting center for the University of Redlands football team that won the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship with a 5-0 record this past fall.

"Elliot made an important contribution to our squad this past year," said Bulldogs head coach Mike Maynard of the 5-foot-11, 275-pound junior. "His attitude and hustle were especially impressive. He developed into our of our best offensive linemen."

Anderson is a two-year letter winner for the Bulldogs, and "he should have a great senior year here," said Redlands line coach Keith Pebley.

    Union runners star

Runners from Union Middle School finished among the leaders when the Central Coast cross country championships for middle schoolers were held earlier in the fall.

Morgan Hancock, Steven Rodas, Kaela Hoch and Jackie Hill all finishers among the leaders in their respective divisions for Union.
