THERE was a double celebration at a family gathering on Christmas Day for Marilyn Wood Wilder of Los Gatos and her twin brother, Merrill Anson Wood of Salinas, for their 70th birthdays. Both were born Dec. 25. "He was eight pounds and I was eight and one ounce," Wilder said. She is a member of Los Gatos Art Docents. Her brother has traveled extensively in Asia for the World Health Organization. Marilyn Wilder adjusted successfully to narcolepsy, a condition that causes its victims to fall asleep involuntarily. "I've learned to live with it," she says.
OWNER of the 7-11 Store at 16250 Los Gatos Blvd. for the past 15 years, Mahmood Waziri might have expected something like this when he drove his expectant wife, Nasrin, to Santa Teresa Hospital on Nov. 21. The new baby boy arrived at 11 minutes after 7 on the date of the couple's 11th wedding anniversary. Baby Yazdon came close to his dad's ideal numbers, weighing in at 7 pounds, 10 1/2 ounces. The Waziris, who immigrated here from Afghanistan, also have two young daughters.
MUSIC in the Plaza concerts should be better than ever this year. Ten concerts are planned, according to Dale Chambers of the Los Gatos Arts Commission. Aiming toward a budget goal of $12,000, ornamental pins--the kind you can wear--will be provided for donors: gold for a $100 donation; silver for $50 and bronze for $5. Fundraising efforts include grant writing and corporate sponsorships. Donations from Los Gatos businesses and individuals are sought to help support the popular programs. JILL MUSSER of Los Gatos is at work in Los Angeles as an assistant director on a new film, The Rock, starring Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage. Musser, 24, was trained in engineering at California Polytechnic. She was in college theater but had no experience in the movie business when she applied in a Walt Disney Productions talent search for apprentice trainees, mother Carol Musser said. "It took over a year before she was accepted," Carol said. "Jill wrote essays and did interviews." Jill now has her card in the Screen Directors Guild. Scenes for the film, scheduled for release next summer, were shot in San Francisco.
ANOTHER Los Gatan who works in L.A., Kristen Kenyon, a graduate of UC-Davis, has a job with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association as manager for annual giving. She was spending three weeks in Rio de Janeiro at the home of Heidi Timmerman, with whom she had worked in San Francisco. She lived in France and Germany and traveled in Europe after graduation.
THE Christmas CanTree Proj-ect, an annual food drive by the Peninsula West Valley Association of Realtors, contributed more than 25,000 cans of food for the less fortunate. The Los Gatos-Saratoga Realtors donated food to the Second Harvest Food Bank in San Jose. The Peninsula West Valley Association represents real estate agents in Silicon Valley and mid-Peninsula communities.
THE Skyland Community Church Bell Choir, under the direction of Margritta Dollard, found a receptive audience Dec. 23 for the Twelve Days of Christmas concerts at Forbes Mill Museum, with the members ringing hand-bells. Bagpiper Dean Whiteside concluded the series Dec. 24.
A STUDENT at Azusa Pacific University, Jennifer Workman of Los Gatos, was selected for the 1996 edition of Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges. The daughter of Dale and Bonnie Workman of Los Gatos shared the honor with 27 other Azusa Pacific student leaders. Azusa ("Everything from A to Z in the USA") is near Pasadena.
FREE tax counseling for low- and moderate-income seniors will be available at the Neighborhood Center, 208 E. Main St., on Monday mornings from Feb. 5 through April 8, and at the Great Western Bank, 449 N. Santa Cruz Ave., Tuesday mornings Feb. 6 through April 2. Seniors should bring all forms from the state and federal government, last year's tax returns, any W-2 forms and 1099 forms. Appointments are for one hour, starting at 9 a.m. with the last appointment at noon. For appointments, phone the center at 354-1514, mornings only. Professional tax-preparers contribute their services.
HAVING completed chemotherapy and toxol treatments last April, Dorothy Eagen, 68, says she is "pretty good." She asks us to pass on thanks to all those who've inquired of her husband, Richard Eagen, and their six children, all of whom live in Los Gatos. "I'm grateful for their concern," she said. The Eagen home is on Topping Way.
A PROCLAMATION from San Francisco mayor Frank Jordan highlighted a recent birthday party for Los Gatan Michael Kowitz, whose dental practice is in Sunnyvale. Dr. Kowitz was cited for his contributions to dentistry and international business in the Bay Area. With a business partner, Laszlo Rakoczi, he has brought U S. technology to Hungary and other countries. Dr. Kowitz holds a degree in international finance. Guests included his brother, Dr. Jerry Kowitz, a Los Angeles dentist, and Cheri Robinson of San Rafael, a family friend.
NEW YEAR'S weekend offered stay-at-home football fanatics a feast of their favorite sport. Among the pleasures was watching former LGHS star Tom Krug quarterback the Notre Dame team in the Orange Bowl. Though the Irish lost to Florida State 31-26, Krug did a great job with that strong right arm, throwing three touchdown passes. Of course all Nebraska alums, this one among them, were in ecstasy over the Cornhuskers' 62-24 romp in the Fiesta Bowl, with Tommie Frazier brushing off tacklers like dinner crumbs.
