Essay challenge asks teens to look inward for solutions

The eighth annual Charles Walton Peace Essay Challenge asks young people to turn inward and speculate on what they might have done by the year 2020 to eliminate racial, religious and ethnic violence.

The Peace Essay Challenge is open to all Bay Area and Santa Cruz County students in ninth through 12th grades. It is sponsored by the San Jose Peace Center, supported by the Collins Foundation, and dedicated to bringing peace and understanding among peoples, and ending hatred and the use of violence to resolve disputes.

Essays must be 1,000-1,500 words and are to be submitted no later than Feb. 26.

One first-place prize of $1,000 will be awarded. There will be two second-place awards of $300 each, three third-place awards of $100 each, four fourth-place awards of $50 each and 10 honorable mentions of $10 each.
