Haunted by the sound of early morning in town

I have lived in Los Gatos for three years, two of which have been on Reservoir Road, up the hill behind the police department. For the last year and a half, I have been haunted. Since moving to Reservoir Road, I am awakened several mornings per week any time between 4 and 5:30 a.m.

Awakened by what? The culprit is the street-cleaning machine that Los Gatos uses. This thing is a huge truck with an equally monstrous vacuum cleaner inside. That machine makes so much noise as to wake me from a dead sleep. Keep in mind, I live three blocks from Main Street and the machine is on Main Street when it wakes me up!

I'm not the only one; I have friends who have talked about this thing being a problem. One lives on Roberts Road; the other on Ashler. I suspect there are numerous people who are awakened as well.

I wonder how long I would be allowed to drive around Los Gatos each morning at 5 a.m. with my top down and a stereo playing at level 10? Why can the city make this kind of noise when it's against the law? This street-cleaning machine is a horrible part of an otherwise great place to live.

Anyone who agrees, please contact me at
my email address, scott@mediacom.com, or send a letter to the mayor.

Moving Steamer's obstructs a piece of local history

It has been brought to my attention that St. Luke's Episcopal Church is a potential victim of today's unsightly progress.

Being a founder and an active member of the Upper Lehigh Historical Society in Pennsylvania, I feel it my duty to actively oppose any defacing or obstructing view of any historical building.

Placing a restaurant in juxtaposition with St. Luke's is a disgrace to the town of Los Gatos.

Los Gatos is one of the rare vintages. It has preserved history with its renowned museum, and people visit from all over the world to enjoy the ambiance.

I will continue to oppose the moving of Steamer's with my petition and hope the "treasure" of Los Gatos (and if you've ever been to St. Luke's, you know it's a treasure) will be kept intact for all of us to enjoy.

LGPD doing good job in Monte Sereno

There was a lot of controversy when the citizens of Monte Sereno had to decide on which law enforcement agency was to represent them. I have nothing against the Sheriff's Department, but I am very pleased with the work of the Los Gatos Police Dept.

We had a large Santa, two plastic reindeer (one has been returned) and a Noel candle stolen over the holidays by some young vandals, and the officers couldn't have done more to help us. They came out twice and kept me informed during the investigation.

Although I was very disgruntled with the vandals who don't have enough self-respect to respect the property of others, I was more than pleased with the LGPD officers. It is sad that we have to try to apprehend these young people whose parents don't care enough about them to supervise their activities. Thank you, LGPD!

It's not skid row, it just looks that way

I was glad to finally see an article in the Jan. 3 issue of the Los Gatos Weekly-Times that finally opens up about the unbelievable sidewalks of Los Gatos. A once-a-year cleaning (if it gets that) is not enough for sidewalks with such
heavy traffic.

Never before have I encountered a city where you can count on getting regularly bitten by fleas just by walking a block or two!

You would never know Los Gatos has a median income of $62,000 by the condition of its sidewalks.

It's odd that a town that's fortunate enough not to have a skid row would want to recreate that look.

Seafood restaurant doesn't belong next to church

It has come to my attention that Steamer's Restaurant is planning to relocate next to St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

As a 20-year-long resident of the town, I am proud of the history and beauty of Los Gatos. In my opinion, its crowning jewel is the lovely church next to Old Town.

To put a noisy, smelly seafood restaurant right next to the oldest church in town would be a cultural and historic anathema. Los Gatos has many restaurants. St. Luke's is unequaled. Please don't destroy the oasis of calm, peace and spirituality that it represents for our town.
