Rack ordinance requires a permit

Publishers who vend their wares via newsracks in Los Gatos must obtain a permit to do so by March 1, almost a year after the Town Council passed an ordinance establishing this requirement.

The council adopted a newsrack ordinance last March, requiring permits for each self-service or coin-operated dispenser on or in the town's right of way. Under the ordinance, the council established a newsrack committee made up of three representatives of the publication and distribution industries. The committee is charged with ensuring compliance with the ordinance; chair Keith Kawashima is operations director for Metro Newspapers, which publishes
the Los Gatos Weekly-Times.

The committee was also responsible for choosing a standard model for newsracks located within the town's designated historic districts. These newsracks must be permanently affixed to the sidewalk by March 1. Newsracks outside historic districts must be permanently affixed at approved locations by July 1.

Since there is limited space available to place newsracks within historic districts, those companies that wished to do so were required to submit applications. The newsrack committee is holding a meeting for these applicants on Jan. 11. Those who cannot attend must call Steve Lester at 264-1045.
