Newman leads Vikes

Sophomore guard Andy Newman tossed in 28 points in two games to lead the West Valley Community College men's basketball team to back-to-back wins in the Diablo Valley Tournament.

Newman tossed in 16 points in a 72-52 win over Porter College, then pitched in 12 points to drive the Vikings to a tight 55-52 win over host Diablo Valley in the tourney title game.

Bob Ladine buried four three-pointers on his way to a 16-point night in the win over Porter. Jamaal Sanford added 13 points and Bennett Davison jammed 11. Jacobi Thompson canned a couple of threes and finished with 10 points. Newman had one three-pointer. Scott Reeves, Derek Mickle and Will Bigge chipped in with two points each.

Davison popped 13 points and Newman added 12, including a pair of threes, to lead the Vikings past Diablo Valley. Thompson drained three threes to finish with 10 points and Ladine added eight points, including two threes. Sanford had seven points and Taplar Mvogo added three.

West Valley, now 14-2 for the year, head to Foothill Jan. 12 for a 7 p.m. game.

Quito Little League

The Quito Little League will hold signups for the 1996 season on Jan. 11, 23 and 25, from 6-9 p.m. each evening, at the Rolling Hills Middle School gym. The league is open to players ages 5-15 living in the West San Jose, Campbell, Los Gatos and Saratoga areas.

The league is also looking for volunteer managers and coaches.

Sports & Boat Show

The 54th annual San Francisco Sports & Boat Show will return to the Cow Palace in Daly City on Jan. 12-21.

Boats, motors, fishing, hunting, camping and windsurfing will be among the events featured at the show.

Admission is $7 for adults and $3 for children. Doors open at noon on weekdays and 11 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
