Los Gatos Weekly-TimesFormer Wildcats star at the collegiate levelJulie Varozza was quite a swimmer during her high school days at Los Gatos. And she's not too bad as a collegiate competitor, either! Varozza, a two-time high school All-American for the Wildcats, is a senior star on the women's swimming team at the University of Georgia. The former Wildcat is a three-time All-American for the Lady Bulldogs, and will try to make that four in competition this winter. Varozza, the daughter of Joe and Jean Varozza of Los Gatos, is a distance star who ranks among Georgia's all-time top 10 in freestyle events at 200, 500, 1,000 and 1,650 yards. She's second on the Georgia list in the 500, 1,000 and 1,650 free. She'll try to lead the Lady Bulldogs to a third straight Southeastern Conference championship this season. Gatos girls row Megan Cooke and Jamie Inman just graduated from Los Gatos last spring, but they have already made names for themselves as collegiate athletes. Cooke and Inman were members of the UC-Berkeley rowing team that place second and third in the novice division at the UC-San Diego Regatta. Cooke rows in the five-seat for the Golden Bears and Inman rows stroke. The two are products of the Los Gatos Rowing Club. Nanez stars Former Gatos soccer great Lisa Nanez continues to star on the soccer field, but now in the collegiate ranks. Nanez, a 1995 Los Gatos graduate, was a senior starter and team captain for the Santa Clara University women's soccer team. She played four years of soccer for the Broncos, helping Santa Clara reach the NCAA Final Four in each of the past three seasons. McMains an ace Mary McMains, a former Los Gatos volleyball sensation, was a starting outside hitter for the women's volleyball team at Brown University in Providence, RI. McMains, a team captain, helped the Bears to their first undefeated league season in school history. Her three service aces helped Brown to a key win over Columbia University in the Ivy League championship tournament.
