Los Gatos Weekly-TimesWhat's going on in business? Frank Stagnaro will tell youBy Dale Bryant Newspapers are expected to know what's going on. We're frequently asked why someone went out of business or what that new building is going in on the corner down the street. We're pretty good at keeping up with who's going to the Planning Commission with a proposal and who's opposing the project. But when it comes to the more visible signs of change, especially in business, we often find ourselves as much in the dark as everyone else. When the popular Mondeo Pronto suddenly disappeared from downtown, for instance, people asked us what happened. The place was always busy, they said. We were surprised, too. It had been only a few months earlier that we announced in our 1997 Best of Los Gatos issue that readers had named Mondeo Pronto the Best Innovative Restaurant in town. That experience helped us to decide that it was time stop shrugging our shoulders when people ask us questions about local businesses. We needed to find someone who would go right to the source and ask: What's going on here? When we discovered that Frank Stagnaro--best known to our readers for his controversial opinion pieces--had a background as a business writer, we knew we'd found our man. Stagnaro's monthly column begins this week in our business section. A Los Gatos resident for 10 years, Stagnaro is retired from SRI International, where he was a technical and marketing writer. He also worked in similar capacities for Rolm and IBM. He'll be snooping around trying to find out what's going on. If you have a tip or a question about local business, give him a call at 374-5881. Dale Bryant is the editor of the Los Gatos Weekly-Times.
