The Prowler

We're all a year older--and hopefully wiser--now that 1998 has rolled around. For some pet owners the Prowler knows, the year also brings the time closer to say good-bye to companion animals who've become like members of the family.

This cat is glad that the Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley, which covers the bases pretty well with programs benefiting dogs and cats, has organized a pet-loss support group. There's no cost to attend, and it doesn't matter what type of pet a person had.

The Prowler wants to compliment a very compassionate human, Humane Society social worker and grief counselor Helaine Ronen, for coming up with the idea for this understanding group. We cats don't have "pets," but the Prowler did have an unlikely friendship with some rats once and so knows what it's like to lose a furry companion.

Here in Los Gatos, meetings take place every first and third Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Terraces of Los Gatos, located at 800 Blossom Hill Road. For more info, call 727-3383 ext. 869.

Bruce and Lynn Bowen, Sunnyvale photographers, know lots of undersea animals, though none as personally as pets. For 20 years, the Bowens made hundreds of dives worldwide and took thousands of brilliant color photographs with underwater cameras.

Fish, seals, snails, sea anemones, coral and seaweed are a few of the mysterious residents of the world's oceans revealed by the Bowens' careful photography. For a sample, check out "The Hidden World of the Sea," on exhibit this month at Village House & Garden Restaurant, 320 Village Lane. Twenty-five percent of art sales benefits Eastfield Ming Quong. Luncheon profits do, too.
