Charlotte Henfling

Longtime Los Gatos resident Charlotte Henfling died Dec. 15 at the age of 88.

Born in 1908 in Hamburg, Germany, Henfling moved with her family to New York in the 1920s. She worked as a nanny while taking courses in nursing, then headed for California and settled in San Francisco. She met her future husband, Michael, at the 1939 World's Fair; they married in 1940 and moved to Los Gatos' Almond Grove district in 1943.

One of Henfling's first jobs was waitressing at the former Live Oak Inn. She later took up nursing again and became a private-duty nurse, working in the homes of many Los Gatos and Saratoga families. She continued working part time until reaching her 70s. Her favorite pastime was gardening.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law Mickey and Bud Springer of Sunnyvale and brothers Joe Ahrens of San Jose, Kurt Ahrens of New York and John Ahrens of Massachusetts.

Memorial services have been held, with interment at Los Gatos Memorial Park.

Edward Place

Former Los Gatan Edward Beardsley Place died Nov. 29 in Scottsdale, Ariz., where he had been residing. He was 70.

Born in Los Gatos on Sept. 4, 1926, Place was the son of George Place, who ran a funeral home where the Chart House now stands on N. Santa Cruz Avenue. Place's great-grandfather, Winfield Scott, founded the city of Scottsdale. Place served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of the Sun City Elks Club in Arizona.

Survivors include wife Sandy of Scottsdale; daughters Jocelynn Myers of Los Gatos, Sue Golda of San Jose and Cynthia Vandenberg of Oregon; son Joel Place of Newman, Calif.; stepchildren Mary, Linda, Kathleen and Jeff; 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held in Scottsdale, Ariz.
