The Prowler
During the springtime, young men aren't the only ones whose fancies turn to thoughts of love. The old cliché doesn't take cats, dogs or birds into account, but never fear--the Prowler is here!
First let's talk about our feathered friends. Some birds don't even wait until after spring to begin scouting for possible places to nest. Fortunately for them, the Wild Bird Center of Los Gatos is holding a birdhouse workshop for young people on Feb. 1 from 4 to 5 p.m. Cozy wooden birdhouses provide the perfect love nest for birds, since the simple abodes stay cooler during the day, warmer at night and dry when it rains.
It's for kids ages 6 and older, with parent participation recommended for those 8 and younger. Cost is $20 per child, with supplies and tools provided by the Wild Bird Center, located at 792 Blossom Hill Road. To make the job easier for little ones--or the
grown-ups helping them--parents are welcome to bring cordless drills with Phillips screwdriver attachments. Call 408.358.WILD for reservations.
From feathers to fur: the Prowler's friends at the nonprofit Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley just sent this cat a reminder that February is Spay & Neuter Month. During February, dog and cat owners can get their pets "altered" at the Humane Society for half-off the shelter's already reasonable prices.
Although everyone knows that having a pet spayed or neutered reduces the unwanted pet population, this cat bets not everyone knows that it also helps reduce pets' risks of developing certain cancers of the reproductive system. Call the Humane Society's appointment line at 408.727.3383, ext. 763.
