Petrillo an All-American
Matthew Petrillo of Los Gatos won All-American honors competing at the Junior Olympic National Championships in Lincoln, Neb.
Petrillo, a seventh grader at Fisher Middle School, finished 21st in the field of 300 regional winners from across the United States competing in the 12-year-old division. The top 25 finishers are considered All-Americans.
Petrillo, in his first year of cross country, won the Pacific Association and Northern California qualifying meets to earn a berth in the nationals. He had won All-American honors in track in the 3000 meters at the summer Junior Olympics and in September took the silver medal at the USA Youth Triathlon National Championships in St. Louis, Mo.
Union qualifiers
A group of Los Gatos runners from Union Middle School qualified for the Junior Olympic National cross country championships in Lincoln, Neb.
Seventh graders Brian Dunlay, Morgan Hancock and Kenton Bess and eighth grader Kaela Hoch earned national berths by placing in the top 20 at the Region 14 championships in Fresno. The four, all members of the Union Track Club coached by Jeff Argabright, also placed in the top 20 at the Pacific Association championships in Rocklin.
