    Health science career scholarships available

    The Auxiliary of the Community Hospital of Los Gatos recently announced several $2,000 scholarships available to local high-school seniors pursuing careers in the health sciences.

    Applicants must be accepted to a four-year college with a major in medicine, nursing, dentistry, radiology, medical technology, pharmacology, physical therapy, social services or dietetics to qualify. The deadline to apply is April 25.

    Interested applicants should contact their high-school guidance counselor or Auxiliary Scholarship chairperson Syd Tierney at Community Hospital of Los Gatos, 815 Pollard Road in Los Gatos, for application forms.

    Los Gatos schools win tree decorating contesy

    The winners of the 12th annual King's Court Festival of Trees event were announced on Jan. 10. Two Los Gatos schools were among the four winners who took home $500 each.

    The second-grade class at St. Mary's School won in the "large group" category, and Shannon Nursery School won for the "preschool" category for their creative Christmas-tree decorating efforts. Local shoppers voted on the winning trees.

    Two Los Gatos High teachers recognized

    Los Gatos High School students who continue on to college after graduation don't forget the high-school teachers who had an influence on their lives. Los Gatos High School recently received a letter from Tufts University in Medford, Mass., praising English teacher Doug Garrett for contributing to a student's intellectual and personal development.

    The University of Maine also sent a letter to LGHS recognizing science teacher Steve Hammack for making a difference in the life of a student who has enrolled in the school's College of Engineering.

    Science projects highly commended

    Chris Choi and Vincent Lok, who are students at Los Gatos High School, were selected as semifinalists in the Western Region of the Siemens Westinghouse Science and Technology Competition. Both science projects were commended by a panel of judges assembled by the College Board and the Educational Testing Service.

    Los Gatos residents on UCSB dean's list

    Los Gatos residents Christina Blevins and Garrett Snyder, who are attending UC-Santa Barbara, were selected for the dean's honors list for their academic achievements during the fall quarter.
