The Prowler
The Prowler always shies away from writing about flap-inducing topics, and this week's column, despite its focus on "safe sex," is no more embroiling than any other.
In truth, this canny cat is only referring to Spay and Neuter Month, the upcoming campaign by the nonprofit Humane Society of Santa Clara Valley. Throughout February, the Human Society offers this life-altering surgery for half-off its regular prices, which are already pretty reasonable.
Spaying and neutering--which applies to female and male animals, respectively--not only help to reduce the overpopulation of unwanted dogs and cats, but also prevent the development of certain types of reproductive cancers. In pets prone to wandering from home or raising a ruckus to attract a mate, alteration usually does away with these troublesome habits.
Fees for dogs range from $23 to $48 for neutering or $28 to $53 for spaying. Cats are $10 and $20 for the same processes. The Prowler hears the Humane Society even alters rabbits! Appointments are necessary; call 408.727.3383, ext. 763, to reserve a spot for Fido, Fluffy or Flopsy.
Speaking of animals, the nonprofit Youth Science Institute has lots of fun and educational science classes for kids coming up! From Jan. 31 through Feb. 3, Owl Experts lets kids dissect an owl pellet to learn what the birds eat for dinner. A craft project is also included. From Feb. 7 to Feb. 10, Awesome Amphibians introduces kids to the Nature Center's resident frogs and newts and their watery lifestyles. Fees are $12 per child, per class; dates vary by age group. Call 408.356.4945 before these popular classes fill up.
