Five pins help Los Gatos Wildcats whip Milpitas

    By Dick Sparrer

Jeff Garlick expected his Los Gatos wrestling team to pin Milpitas with a loss last week. And that's exactly what the Wildcats did.

Los Gatos pinned in five weight classes on the road to a lopsided 46-24 dual match victory over the Trojans. The win helped the Cats improve to 2-0 in the rugged De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.

Pins by Dae-Jin Joseph, Stephen Baker, Tim Odell, James Pease and Matt Kanzler sparked the Cats to the big win. Gatos added three more decision wins and a forfeit victory on the way to the team victory.

The win, coupled with a tight 35-27 triumph over a tough Fremont squad a week earlier, gives Los Gatos a 2-0 league mark heading into a key bout with Los Altos this week. The Eagles will fly in for a 6:30 p.m. match on Jan. 19.

Los Altos found wrestling league favorite Monta Vista very tough before losing a close 30-27 decision a couple of weeks back. The Matadors, 3-0 in the division with wins over Cupertino and Wilcox along with LA, had to win at 215 and pin at heavyweight to pull out the win over the Eagles.

Los Gatos was able to string together five straight wins in the middle weights to turn back Milpitas last week.

Baker pinned at 135 pounds, and Andrew Pease won by forfeit at 140 to help push the Cats out to a big team lead.

Odell and J. Pease nailed back-to-back pins at 145 and 152 before Jerry Yuhara cruised to a 6-1 victory at 160 pounds.

Kanzler capped the day when he won by fall at 189 pounds, and Los Gatos had more than enough of a cushion to hold on for the team win.

Gatos got off to a strong start in the match, winning three of the first round matches.

Freshmen Matthew Nudelman and Ted Ross each posted decision wins in the early going. Nudelman won 9-2 at 103 pounds, and Ross came through with a 12-4 victory at 119.

Joseph pinned at 125 to give the Wildcats a commanding early lead.
