Manufacturing Group gives lifetime award to Jack Lewis

Amdahl chairman is a role model

By Jeff Kearns

Monte Sereno resident Jack Lewis was awarded the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group's Silicon Valley Lifetime Achievement Award Dec. 9, for his contributions to the Valley's economy and quality of life.

Lewis is chairman of the board at Sunnyvale-based Amdahl Corporation, and worked to help raise money for traffic relief measures A in 1992 and A and B in 1996, and headed fundraising efforts for United Way in past years.

"I think businesses have an obligation to run their companies well and to help their communities," Lewis said. The traffic relief measures, he says, aren't important just to the companies in the valley, but to everyone.

Manufacturing Group president and CEO Carl Guardino praised Lewis: "The corporate and community contributions of Jack Lewis set a high standard for valley employees to emulate. He reminds us that success isn't measured by how much you make, but by how much you give."

Founded in 1977 by Hewlett-Packard co-founder David Packard, the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group is made up of 130 valley employers, and lobbies for the interests of high-tech companies and their employees.

The Manufacturing Group gives the Lifetime Achievement Award every year to a high-tech leader who served as a role model in both the business sector and the community, and who works to make the region a better place to live, work and do business. Last year's award went to Intel co-founder and chairman emeritus Gordon Moore.

Lewis is a former chairman of the Manufacturing Group's board of directors, where he focused on improving regional transportation, air quality, the environment and education.

Lewis has lived in Monte Sereno for 12 years, and in Saratoga for 10 years before that. He also sits on the Board of Directors at Vitesse Semiconductor, Cypress Semiconductor, and Pinnacle Systems, and is on the Board of Trustees for Santa Clara University.
