Angelopoulos romps to Resolution Run win

More than 300 area runners resolved to start the new year off right ... with a 5-mile run from Los Gatos High to the Lexington Dam and back again.

It was the eighth annual Los Gatos Resolution Run, and 325 runners competed in the event sponsored by Athletic Performance.

Jim Angelopoulos was the first runner to race to the finish line, covering the 5 miles in 27:57.3. Willy Gharapihan was second in 27:41.8, with Guadalupe Sanchez third (28:57.9), Jeff Kirk fourth (29:04), Todd Morton fifth (29:16) and Jeff Candello sixth (29:18).

Erin McCarty was the women's champ, running the race in 33:08. Beth Weinrich was second (34:29), with Judi Shade third (35:15).

Angelopoulos finished a minute ahead of Sanchez to nail first in the men's 30-39 age division. Steve Thomas was third in 29:23.

Gharapihan was the winner in the boys 17-and-under division, with Chris Blancarte second (29:37).

Kirk was tops in the men's 40-49 age group with Candello second and Norm Gould third (30:47), and Morton took the men's 18-29 title, with Paul Heinan second (30:54).

Bob Anderson won the men's 50-59 title in 31:21, with Doug Brown second (33:22) and Leroy Dahleen third (34:00), and James Hamm was tops in the men's 60-and-over class.

McCarty was the easy winner in the women's 18-29 age division, with Weinrich second, and Shade breezed to a win in the women's 50-59 class, with Georgia Riley second (36:29) and Carol Chinn third (37:07).

Belinda Heerwogen was first in the women's 40-49 division in 35:59, with Pamela Helmer second (39:05) and Mary Massee third, and Liz Devilt took the women's 30-39 title in 38:10 ,with Sheila Erickson second (39:15) and Jeanne Pope third.

Becky Simmons ran 36:00 to claim the crown in the girls 17-and-under group, and Diane Bromstead won the title in the women's 60-and-over division.

The race benefits the LGHS track repair fund.
