The Prowler

Although people may say that cats and kids don't get along--perhaps due to some felines' reputation for being elusive and impatient--the Prowler loves little ones. And children are just the readers this week's column will likely appeal to the most.

That "hunnie"-loving, misadventure-prone bear, Winnie-the-Pooh, leaves Eeyore, Piglet and crew to come to Los Gatos later this month. At 6 p.m. on Jan. 29 and 1 p.m. on Jan. 30, Pooh will appear at Borders Books, Music & Cafe in the children's section on the second floor. Following a special Pooh Bear storytime--complete with goodie bags for the first 20 children--Pooh makes his grand entrance with honey and graham crackers in paw. All ages are welcome at this free event.

Although reading is a great way to show youngsters the "whole wide world" that awaits them, sometimes there's no substitute for hands-on learning. With that in mind, the nonprofit Youth Science Institute holds a variety of afternoon science classes for pre-kindergartners through third-graders at its Vasona Park Nature Center.

From Jan. 25 to Jan. 27, "Micro Mysteries" introduces youngsters to fiber-optic microscopes and the tiny hidden worlds inside a drop of pondwater or underneath a leaf. From Feb. 1 to 4, "Chemical Changes" offers experiments with a variety of substances as they interact and change shape and form. The Feb. 8 to 11 program is "Beautiful Junk," in which creative tykes can learn about recycling and craft a unique art project using recycled materials.

Classes take place on different dates and times grouped according to age level. For fees or more information, call 356-4945.
