Accountants give tips for flood victims
The California Society of CPAs says that while flood victims should take full advantage of tax benefits, they should also be prepared to be challenged and, in many cases, audited.
The society says courts may accept oral testimony to claim property losses, but the Internal Revenue Service may want full documentation.
Flood victims who don't have full documentation are advised to take the following steps:
* order duplicate bank and credit card statements;
* obtain videotapes and photos of their home; and
* obtain catalogs from companies that manufactured the merchandise in their home, including clothes.
A free brochure for disaster victims can be obtained by calling 1-800-9CALCPA.
