Longs closes its drugstore on Winchester Boulevard
By Gloria I. Wang
Longs Drugs on Los Gatos Boulevard will close its doors Jan. 30, after having been in town for more than 15 years. That doesn't mean Longs is leaving Los Gatos, however--the Longs in the Kings Court Shopping Center has no plans to close, and a new Longs is expected to open at the Rinconada Hills Shopping Center before the end of the year.
According to Longs' Santa Clara District Manager Marlon Bradford, the company decided not to sign a long-term lease agreement after the lease on the current site, next to Nob Hill, expired last year. Six months ago, Longs made the decision to close the store and made arrangements to shift certain operations to other stores.
Bradford says the greeting cards that were available at the Los Gatos Boulevard Longs will now be in stock at the Kings Court Longs. In addition, 70 percent of the employees will be shifted to the Kings Court Store; the rest will be moved to other Longs Drugs stores.
The post office located inside the Longs shut down Jan. 15. Bradford says because it was independent from the drugstore, it closed early for accounting purposes.
Bud Lortz, Los Gatos' director of community development, says the town has not received word on which business will replace Longs in the shopping center.
