Gatos girls roll past Fremont, Vikes
Horn's five goals spark Cats to wins
By Dick Sparrer
It was "take no prisoners" week for the girls soccer team at Los Gatos. Or at least that must have been the way it seemed for a couple of Gatos opponents last week when the Wildcats rolled to lopsided victories over Fremont and Lynbrook.
In all, Los Gatos won four games last week to improve to 9-2-1 for the year and to 7-0 in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
The Wildcats pulled out a tight 3-2 win over Live Oak in a non-league game to finish the week, and opened the week with a close 2-1 victory over Mountain View.
But in between the Cats were rolling 11-0 over the Firebirds and 4-0 over the Vikings.
It was a 20-goal week for the Wildcats with nine girls getting in on the goal-scoring. Senior co-captain Kirstin Horn led the club with five goals on the week and Kate Demers knocked in four.
Horn, Demers and Carolyn Penner each scored goals for the Cats in the 3-2 non-league win over Live Oak. The game was a make-up for a Dec. 4 cancellation.
Junior Emily Gordon played a key role in the Gatos victory with three assists.
Horn drilled three goals, Gordon had two goals and an assist, and Penner added a goal and two assists in an 11-0 slaughter of Fremont.
Brittany Shand popped two goals for the Cats and Demers, Ashley Benson and Merin Clark each had a goal and an assist.
Sarah Yuki chipped in with two assists and Liz Morrissey, Ali Dodson and Corynn Carino each had an assist.
There weren't as many goals, but the Cats still had a pretty easy time on the way to a 4-0 win over Lynbrook two days earlier.
Emily Shanker scored two goals, both off Penner assists, to lead the Cats to the win over the Vikings. Horn scored off a Carino assist and Demers scored unassisted in the game.
Los Gatos opened the week with a hard-earned 2-1 win over Mountain View. Second-half goals by Demers and Cheryl Parkman sparked the win for the Cats.
Los Gatos takes its 7-0 league record up against Santa Clara and Lynbrook this week. The Wildcats visit the Bruins on Jan. 22 and host the Vikings on Jan. 24 in a pair of 3:30 p.m. games.
One goal for boys
In contrast to the girls, the Los Gatos boys could manage just one goal in four games last week. But the Cats still lost just one of four games and made that single goal stand up for a victory.
The Wildcats pulled out a 1-0 non-league win over St. Francis last week thanks to a second-half goal by Jeff Li. Gatos lost a 2-0 non-league decision to St. Ignatius later in the week.
