Cats ready for second half

Gatos girls are perfect

One more time!

That's what they're saying on the soccer field at Los Gatos this week.

Because the Wildcats are about to embark on one more trip through the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League. And if the second half is anything like the first, it should be another championship year for Los Gatos.

Gatos wrapped up the first half of the league season with impressive shutout wins over Gunn and Homestead. The two wins left the Wildcats 6-0 in division play and 13-0 for the year.

The Cats visit St. Francis on Jan. 24 at 2:45 p.m. and host Saratoga on Jan. 26 at 3:30 p.m. as they open the second half of the division season. The Lancers are currently second in the division with a 4-1-1 record.

Los Gatos scored 10 goals in two games last week to add two more notches in the win column this winter.

The Wildcats bombed Gunn 7-0, then blanked Homestead 3-0.

Freshman standout Stacey Caro had two goals and an assist and senior star Stacey Mallison added two goals to lead the Cats to the easy win over the Titans.

Junior Kim Fredkin and sophomore Melissa Schmidt each had a goal and an assist for the winners, and junior Natalie Stuhlmueller scored a goal.

Freshman Amie Salfen, junior Adrianne Busi and junior Anne Zuparko added assists for Gatos.

The loss was the first of the year for the Titans, who slipped to 2-1-2 in division play and to 5-1-2 for the year.

Los Gatos pinned Homestead with a 3-0 later in the week.

Stuhlmueller scored off a Salfen assist to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead in the first half, and Gatos clinched the victory with a pair of insurance goals in the second half.

Stuhlmueller had a goal and an assist in the second half, scoring off an assist from freshman Giselle Sylvester and assisting senior Amy White on another goal.

Leigh girls win

Rochelle Ouchi scored a second-half goal to snap a scoreless tie and lift the Leigh girls' soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 win over Del Mar in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.

Leigh improved to 6-1 in the division and to 11-2-1 for the year with the victory.

Longhorns win

Brian Negrini buried a pair of goals to lead the Leigh boys' soccer team to a 4-1 win over Independence last week. The Longhorns scored open a scoreless game with four goals in the second half.

Leigh jumped to 4-1-1 in the Santa Teresa Division of the BVAL with the victory.

The Longhorns had blanked Oak Grove 1-0 and edged Yerba Buena 2-1 a week earlier.

Gatos boys split

Goals by Andy Pierce and Nick Sorich sparked the Los Gatos boys' soccer team to a 2-0 win over Gunn, but the Wildcats lost 4-0 to Homestead to suffer a split in the week's games.

Pierce scored off a Grant Kollenborn assist early in the second half to break up a scoreless tie with the Titans. Sorich added an insurance goal later in the game.

But the Wildcats were blanked by the Mustangs a couple of days later, dropping them to 4-2 in the De Anza Division and to 6-6-1 for the year.

Los Gatos had opened the league season with three straight wins before suffering a tough 2-0 loss to Palo Alto.
