Stop & Shop needs more lighting

By Tracy Palazzo

Many neighbors of the Stop & Shop on Leigh Avenue say they accept the town's recent approval of reduced security at the convenience store, but they remain concerned about poor lighting and excessive loitering by teenagers in the area.

"The store has made tremendous strides from what it was before," said Gordon Jones, a neighbor of the store. "But we aren't pleased with the current lighting in the area."

The Los Gatos Planning Commission on Dec. 13 reviewed Stop & Shop owner Faramaz Ebrahimoon's conditional-use permit application. The commission agreed with town staff that Ebrahimoon needs to add lighting to the north side of the building by Jan. 31.

Ebrahimoon has agreed to comply with the town's direction.

Neighbors of the convenience store had voiced opposition to reducing the security guard hours from noon-9 p.m. to 7-10 a.m. and 2-5 p.m. But Jones said the reduced hours seem to be effective.

"We definitely want an aggressive anti-loitering presence from the security guard," he said.
