'Horns win two, Cats lose two
By Dick Sparrer
The boys basketball teams at Los Gatos and Leigh started the week in similar positions in their respective league races. But they certainly didn't finish the same.
Both the Wildcats and Longhorns were 3-0 in division play heading into the week. The Cats sat in a virtual tie for first place in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League, and the 'Horns were tied for first in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League.
Well, the Longhorns remain in first place in the Mt. Hamilton circuit, beating Oak Grove 64-59 and Andrew Hill 65-54 to improve to 5-0 in league play. But the Wildcats lost twice, falling 63-45 to first-place Milpitas and 45-39 to second-place Palo Alto, to slip to 3-2 in the De Anza Division.
Antwon Guidry poured in 38 points in two games to lead the Longhorns to the back-to-back league wins.
Guidry tossed in 18 points to lead Leigh to the 64-59 win over the Eagles to open the week. Byron Taplin, Darren Fujikawa and Josh Kreuzer supported with 10 points each in the week. Guidry and Fujikawa each popped a pair of three-pointers.
Keith Miyakusa had a three among his six points, Derek Marquardt added four points, and Mark Perry, Marcus Anderson and Steve Varghese hit two points each.
Guidry came back with 20 points and Miyakusa bombed 18 in the 65-54 win over Hill. Each one hit a three-pointer in the win. Kreuzer and Taplin supported with 10 points apiece, Varghese had four and Perry three.
Leigh is now 14-5 for the year.
Los Gatos, meanwhile, suffered its first league loss on Wednesday night when the Cats dropped a 63-45 nod to Milpitas.
Matt Gingery led the Wildcats with 17 points, and Beau Knight chipped in with 11. Knight drilled three three-pointers, and Gingery added one three.
Matt Swanson tossed in six points, Chris McMorrow hit five, Ben Kane had five, and Alex Holcomb popped two.
The Wildcats stayed with Milpitas throughout the first half. The Trojans led 12-9 after a period, but Gatos matched 18 points by Milpitas in the second quarter to trail by just three at intermission, 30-27. Milpitas, though, topped Gatos 14-9 in the third and 18-9 in the fourth to clinch the win.
Los Gatos dropped a second straight decision later in the week, falling 45-39 to Palo Alto.
The Cats were down just 9-8 at the first buzzer and were behind by just three at the half, 17-14. But Paly topped Gatos 16-8 in the third quarter to take control of the game.
Gingery finished with 13 points to lead all Gatos scorers. Kane, Knight, Swanson and Trent Edwards supported with six points each and McMorrow hit two.
Los Gatos will try to get back on the winning track this week when the Wildcats host Gunn on Jan. 25, 7 p.m., in the final game of the first round.
