Gatos girls split, Leigh drops two
By Dick Sparrer
For six quarters, it appeared that the Los Gatos girls basketball team was on its way to a couple of wins in the El Camino Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League.
But then came the second half against Mountain View last Thursday night.
The Wildcats rolled to a 47-33 win over Lynbrook to open the week, and they came back to take a 22-11 halftime lead against Mountain View. But the Spartans topped the Cats 26-10 in the second half on Thursday to pull out a 37-32 victory.
Los Gatos, 4-2 in division play and 12-7 for the year, jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the first period and outscored Mountain View 10-6 in the second to take an 11-point lead by intermission. But the Spartans outpointed Gatos 14-4 in the third to cut the lead to one, then overtook the Wildcats in the final quarter.
Michelle Beritzhoff topped all Gatos scorers with nine points in the loss. Cristen McClenathan had a three among her seven points, Nancy Shishido added six points, and Julia Pugliese and Katrina Sortino hit five apiece. Sortino also hit a three.
Shishido poured in 13 points, Beritzhoff hit 11, and McClenathan added 10 to lead the Wildcats to the win over the Vikings to open the week.
Kristin Ozawa supported with eight points, Sortino had three and Pugliese two. Ozawa, Sortino and Shishido each dropped three-pointers.
Los Gatos opened up a 19-7 lead in the first period and led by 14 at the half, 31-17. Then the Cats held off the Vikes in the second half to clinch the win.
The Leigh girls, meanwhile, lost twice in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, despite getting 28 points from Kimberly Schlief in the two games.
The Longhorns dropped a 64-32 decision to Independence. Schlief led Leigh with 16 points in the game.
Leigh dropped a 46-23 decision to Westmont later in the week. Schlief topped the Longhorns with 12 points.
Leigh is now 1-5 in the division.
