    Remembering and Retiring

Los Gatos High School held a special memorial basketball game Jan. 24 to honor 1987 graduate and varsity basketball player Todd Beamer, who died aboard Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001. The game was preceded by a program of short eulogies from school staff, Vice Mayor Sandy Decker, and Beamer's two closest friends from Los Gatos. Dave Beamer, Todd's father, introduced his wife, Peggy, and Todd's sister Michele--the three had flown to California from the East Coast--and encouraged the audience, particularly the youth, to 'make the right choices' and 'do things right.' Varsity basketball coach Jim Marino officially retired Beamer's No. 25 jersey. All proceeds from the game against Lynbrook High School went toward the Todd M. Beamer Scholarship Fund for Los Gatos High School Basketball Players. After the presentation, Los Gatos-Saratoga Joint Union High School District Superintendent Cindy Ranii (front) shakes hands with Michele Beamer while Dave Beamer (at Michelle's right) and Jeff Brzycki look on.
