A 'suspicious' fire destroys local duplex

At approximately 3:35 a.m. Jan. 21, flames that began in a bedroom spread to the rest of an unoccupied Pine Avenue duplex. Firefighters were able to put out the one-alarm fire quickly; three of the rooms were destroyed. Fire administrators estimate $80,000 worth of damage to the structure and $10,000 worth of damage to the contents inside.

About 75 percent of one-half of the duplex was destroyed, making the unit not livable. The fire department has classified the blaze as a "suspicious fire." An investigation is under way.
