Wildcats crush the MatadorsLos Gatos boys, girls roll to soccer victoriesBy Dick Sparrer Monta Vista was certainly no match for Los Gatos last week... at least, when it came to boys and girls high school soccer. The two Gatos varsity squads combined for eight goals and allowed none in a couple of games against the Matadors last week. The boys pushed their record to 4-2-2 in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League and their overall mark to 6-3-5 with a lopsided 5-0 win over Monta Vista last week. Senior Curt Wahlstrom scored off a Peter Hoffman assist, and Ed Simmonds knocked in a penalty kick to help the Wildcats jump out to a 2-0 first-half lead against the Mats. The Cats came back with three goals in the second half to complete the rout. David Ibarra scored off a Wahlstrom assist, Chris Cavanagh scored off a Ben Frazier assist, and Don Hilliker scored off a Cavanagh assist. Senior goalkeeper Jordan Stuhlmueller continues to be dominant in the cage for the Cats. The girls, meanwhile, handled Monta Vista 3-0 last week. The Cats are now 6-2-1 in the De Anza Division and 11-3-1 for the year. Senior standout Marcia Wallis scored a couple of first-half goals, one off an assist from Stacey Caro, to help stake the Wildcats to a 2-0 lead at intermission. Amie Salfen closed out the scoring when she knocked in a goal in the second half off an assist from Sunny Vizzusi. The Gatos girls will be out to continue their winning ways this week when they visit powerful St. Francis on Feb. 2 and head to Los Altos on Feb. 4 for a couple of 3:30 p.m. games. Gatos girls win The Los Gatos girls basketball team, meanwhile, nailed its first win of the De Anza Division season last week, beating Palo Alto 46-34. Junior guard Nancy Shishido pitched in 14 points, including a couple of three-pointers, to lead the Wildcats to the victory. Sara Clark joined Shisido in double digits with 11 points. Trina Mills hit nine, Rachelle Townsend five, Shannon Hart four and Julia Pugliese three. Townsend and Pugliese each dropped a three-pointer. The Cats and Vikings were locked in a 10-10 tie at the first buzzer, but Gatos blitzed Paly 18-4 in the second period to take control of the game. The 14-point halftime cushion stood up, and Gatos nailed a 12-point win. The Wildcats are now 1-7 in the De Anza Division and 9-10 for the year. They'll host powerful Monta Vista on Feb. 3, 7 p.m., before visiting Santa Clara on Feb. 5, 7:30 p.m. Wrestlers pin sixth The Los Gatos wrestling team wrapped up a sixth-place team finish at the Overfelt Classic tournament over the weekend. The Wildcats ran up 89.5 points to edge Gilroy (88.5) for sixth. Dan Benedetti and Kenny Troquato-Perotti each finished third to lead the Gatos attack at the tournament. Benedetti won his last match 7-2 to clinch third place at 140 pounds, and Troquato-Perotti pulled out a tight 8-7 victory to nail third at 152. David Stassart dropped a tough 2-0 nod in his last match to wind up fourth at 125 pounds for the Cats. Dae-Jin Joseph (112) and James Pease (130) were each sixth for Los Gatos, Michael Narducci (189) was seventh and David Serwitz (145) eighth. The Wildcats had opened the week with an impressive 34-21 upset win over Los Altos. Pins by David Potts and Troquato-Perotti sparked the Cats to the victory. Potts pinned at 103 pounds and Troquato-Perotti won by fall at 160 to key the win for Los Gatos. Joseph won 12-2 at 112, Pease posted an 8-2 victory at 130, Benedetti pulled out a 5-2 win at 140, Serwitz was a 3-0 winner at 145, and Narducci came through with a 6-5 win at 189 pounds.
