It just may have been the preview of a Central Coast Section playoff game later in the year.

But if it was, the Los Gatos girls' soccer team certainly hopes the results are much different.

Soccer powers Los Gatos and St. Francis collided in a key game in the De Anza Division of the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League last week, and the Lancers scored two second-half goals to turn back the Wildcats 3-1.

The loss left the Cats 7-1-1 in the division and 10-3-1 for the year. St. Francis improved to 9-0-1 in De Anza play and to 12-2-2 for the season.

The two teams rank among the best in the CCS in girls' soccer, and both are favorites for post-season honors. But the Lancers took the edge in league play with the win last week.

Marcia Wallis knocked in a second-half goal off assists from Stacey Caro and Kelly Castaneda to match a first-half goal by St. Francis. But the Lancers answered with two goals in the second half to win 3-1.

Gatos had opened the week with a 3-0 shutout win over Mountain View. Wallis led the Cats to the victory with a goal and two assists. Melissa Schmidt and Amanda Vellejo also scored goals for the Wildcats, and Caro had an assist.

The Los Gatos boys, meanwhile, pulled out a clutch 2-1 win over Milpitas last week to jump to 3-2-3 in De Anza Division play.

Goals by Jedd Martin and Zach Pine off assists from Nathan Foss and Alan Rosa sparked the Wildcats to the league win.

The Cats and Trojans were knotted 1-1 at the half, but Martin scored off the Rosa assist to snap the tie in the second half.

The Leigh boys split a pair of decisions in the Mt. Hamilton Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League last week, losing 2-1 to Oak Grove but coming back to beat Willow Glen 2-0.

Kelly Gray picked up assists from Chris Merkt and Chad Salstrom to score a pair of goals in the win over the Rams. Leigh improved to 4-4 in the division and to 8-6-2 for the year with the win.

Earlier in the week, Andy Marvin scored off a Lee Wilcox assist, but the Longhorns lost the 2-1 heartbreaker to the Eagles.

The Leigh girls dropped a couple of tough 2-1 Mt. Hamilton Division decisions last week, losing to Presentation and Independence.

Junior forward Emily Patterson knocked in Leigh's only goal in the 2-1 loss to the 76ers.

Leigh had lost 2-1 to unbeaten Presentation to open the week. The Longhorns are now 3-3-2 in the division and 8-5-4 for the year.
