Good Samaritan Hospital welcomes Senior Friends

Good Samaritan Hospital, 2425 Samaritan Drive at the San Jose-Los Gatos border, encourages all interested senior citizens living in the West Valley area to join its chapter of the National Association of Senior Friends, a nonprofit, hospital-based health and wellness program open to anyone age 50 and older. The seniors in Good Sam's group take part in monthly activities, outings and informational programs. Some are free; others have small fees. The following are some upcoming events.

  • Living With Arthritis. On Feb. 6 at 5 p.m. in the hospital auditorium, doctors from Good Sam's Arthritis & Joint Replacement Center will talk about the pros and cons of different arthritis treatments and share tips on how to cope with pain and stiffness.

  • Older Adult Therapy Group. This new program from the Behavioral Health Department takes place every Wednesday from 1 to 2:30 p.m. in the auditorium. Covered by Medicare and most private insurance, it provides support, sources and clinical care for senior citizens dealing with issues such as loss, grief, declining health, aging, lifestyle transitions and loneliness.

  • The Lunch Bunch. This group meets for lunch at South Bay restaurants every month. On Feb. 13, the venue is Mariani's Inn and Restaurant in Santa Clara. Refreshments and social time begin at 11:30 p.m., with a three-course lunch served at 12:30 p.m. Entertainment is provided by violinist John Kraus. Cost is $25 per person.

  • Ask a Pharmacist. One of Good Sam's pharmacists will be available in the hospital's main lobby on Feb. 25 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. to answer any questions or concerns seniors have about prescription or non-prescription medications.

Other Senior Friends activities include various health screenings, movie matinees, theater performances, mature driving courses, exercise groups and cooking classes. Membership is $15 per year. For information about membership or any of the above events, call 408.559.2555.
