The grand jury needs volunteers for new term

The Santa Clara County Superior Court is once again seeking volunteers for its 2002-'03 civil grand jury.

As the county's investigative body, the grand jury can examine all aspects of county and city governments and special districts. Applicants for the jury must be at least 18 years old and have lived in Santa Clara County for at least one year. They must have a sufficient knowledge of English and, according to the court, be in "possession of natural faculties and of sound judgement and fair character."

For more information, contact Gloria Alicia Chacón, the grand jury coordinator, at 408.299.3608. The deadline to apply is March 1.

The beautification committee is seeking projects

The Town of Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce's Beautification Committee is looking for ways to benefit the community. Headed up by Antiquarium co-owner Shirley Henderson, the committee wants to beautify community entrances and work on Los Gatos Boulevard landscaping in 2002.

Committee members are also taking project suggestions from the community; those with ideas are asked to call Henderson at 408.354.7878 or attend a monthly committee meeting. In addition, those wanting trees planted anywhere in town can call Tim Boyer at 408.399.5777 with location ideas.

Trial is set for accused child molester

A trial for accused child molester Lee Thomas Bjorn, 55, is scheduled for March 4. Bjorn is charged with 11 counts of molesting three Los Gatos girls in the 1970s; he allegedly committed similar crimes in Santa Cruz County and a trial there is also pending. Bjorn's Santa Clara County trial was originally set for Jan. 28, but the defense requested a continuance.

The trial will take place at 8:30 a.m. in Department 24 of the Santa Clara County Superior Court.
