Organization to host forum on reform

EdSource, an independent, nonprofit, statewide organization that provides information on K-12 state education issues, will host a forum that explores whether California can raise student performance during tough economic times. The organization's 25th annual forum, "Investing in High Expectations: The Cost of Raising K-12 Standards," will also address whether standards-based reform is effective for all students and whether necessary resources will be available in today's economic climate.

The one-day forum will take place March 14 at the Ontario Marriott in Southern California and March 15 at The Westin Santa Clara in Santa Clara. After registration, which begins at 8 a.m., the conference will run from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Those attending must register by March 5. The fee--which includes parking, an information packet, a continental breakfast and lunch--is $60 for EdSource subscribers and $70 for non-subscribers. Those who register by Feb. 15 pay $10 less.

To register, log onto the EdSource website, www.edsource.org, or send a check to EdSource, 4151 Middlefield Road, Suite 100, Palo Alto, 94303-4743. Include the date and location of the conference on the check.

Sponsors include Applied Materials, Bank of America Foundation, IBM, Pacific Life Foundation, The Stupski Family Foundation, Washington Mutual, The William G. McGowan Charitable Fund and Wells Fargo.

    Los Gatos hospital offers scholarships

The Auxiliary of the Community Hospital of Los Gatos is offering several scholarships, worth at least $2,000 each, for local high school seniors pursuing health science careers. To qualify, applicants must be accepted to a four-year college with a major in medicine, nursing, dentistry, radiology, medical technology, pharmacology, physical therapy, social services or dietetics. Applicants must apply by April 25.

For application forms and information, contact high school guidance counselors or Syd Tierney, head of the scholarship committee, at the hospital, 815 Pollard Road, Los Gatos.

Hispanic magazine and site honor West Valley

Saludos Hispanos/Saludos.com, a career and education magazine and website for bilingual Hispanics, recently awarded West Valley College a 2001 Educators of Distinction award. The magazine and website gives the award to 100 institutions each year that demonstrate a commitment to higher education success for Hispanics, the nation's largest and fastest-growing minority.

In the last decade, the percentage of Hispanic students at the college has more than doubled, from less than 7 percent to more than 15 percent of the student body.
